Jeesh vegetarians have their hearts in weird places :)

I don't eat much meat, at all, though could not live happily without cheese. I agree with and respect vegetarians and vegans on many important issues. BUT (you knew that was coming) I do want people to recognize that vegetarianism is something that only exists in a place of privilege.

I have seen little kids at orphanages in a third world country, who had their own bamboo baskets of rice and plenty of veggie stew, literally fight each other for palmfulls of meat. Poor people don't have edemame and rice dream ice cream and tofurkey, and the human body does crave protein. The ethics of mass factory farming and animal suffering being another (and important) issue, I do want to raise the point that vegetarianism is pretty much a first-world luxury.

I have to confess I'd love to be a vegetarian, but I have this irrational love for bloody meat. Someday I will be no more selfish and stop eating innocent little animals.
