Having a Baby in 1930

Flash back to 1930.  Look at this bill for childbirth.  10 days in hospital - $50
Circumcision - $3
Total - $53

According to Forbes, the total charge in 2009 for an uncomplicated birth with 3 day hospital stay at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles was $36,625.

That seems a little high but good luck trying to find out the actual charge ahead of time.  You better round up between $7,000 and $15,000 and that will not include the circumcision or prenatal visits, ultrasounds and other modern perks.  It may or may not include the epidural which will likely be billed separately by the anesthesiologist.

Of course the obstetrician pays between $100K and $200K for annual malpractice insurance (depending upon the State) to make sure you have a perfect baby.  Nothing is the same as 1930...except the great depression and the current great recession.

A few days ago I was talking to a OB/GYN office manager I know who told me the doctor there ,who is the one still delivering babies and doing pre-natal care, has seen a drop in his practice of patients having babies recently with the bad economy and has more openings because of it. This was a doctor who was usually booked up heavily a few weeks ahead and difficult to find a place to work in someone that needed to be seen sooner. She also told me about another well known OB/GYN in the community who had a closed practice for many years who I had heard recently reopened his practice, taking new patients, did so due to the same drop in women getting pregnant and having babies lacking in the current need for OB Care with this lingering bad economy.

Or, come birth with my practice for a self pay rate of $1800-2200, including all prenatal care, delivery at home, birth center or hospital (our hospital has a fee of $2500 for one night stay), postpartum home visits, a 2 week week mom and baby check up and a 6 week mom check. :)

I would guess to covert 1930's dollars to todays would be to multiply by 15-20x so 53$ would be about 1000$. Still a good deal for 10 days!
