Seven Tips for Healthy 2012 Planning

As we welcome a new year it is an opportunity to re-evaluate, consider the coming year and make intentions for improving our health and sense of well being.  EverythingHealth sifts through the latest medical literature and evidence to offer these proven recommendations for staying on top of your game.
  • If you are 50 or older and haven't had a colonoscopy, schedule one in 2012.  It's time! 
  • Go online and check your Body Mass Index (BMI).  If you are too high, plan and execute on that diet.  (contact me for a diet coach referral if needed)
  • Get rid of sugar and soft drinks.  Stevia is a natural sweetener that is safe and yummy.  The average American eats 160 lbs of sugar a year. Break the sugar habit in 2012
  • Stop smoking. For motivation go here.
  • Relax your mind.  Start yoga, meditative dance, meditation.  These practices have been shown to lower blood pressure and general stress.
  • Send one thank you note a week.  That is 52 notes in 2012.  You can send it to your child, co-worker, grocer, doctor, spouse or even an acquaintance.  The act of thanking and reaching out to others is healing for both sides.
  • Become an activist.  Find one cause that you feel passionate about and get fully involved. Here are some to consider,  but there are hundreds of other great organizations and it has to be your own interest.

          Women for Women International.    (adopt a sister in a war torn nation.  Many of these women  have suffered atrocities, have no money and support many children.  If you help the women, you raise the standard for the whole community)
         U.S Humane Society  (They do wonderful work to protect animals, expose inhumane and unhealthy farming and promote legislation to make humans and animals safer)
         Foster Children -  (You don't need to adopt,  but you can get involved in a number of organizations that help these kids transition out of foster care into adulthood.  When they reach 18 the system is "done" with them.  Can you imagine your own 18 year old making it alone?  Check in your own community for programs and mentorships.)

Is your diet coach referral to a registered dietician or nutritionist? If someone is not educated, trained, registered or licensed in the field you need to be careful not be taken advantage of and sold fad gimmick diets that are not evidence based, or approved by the FDA to be healthy or had clinical studies proving to be unhealthy. Be savvy,and look into the credentials, and education.

Your local hospitals usually has a registered dietician working on staff and some have programs for sliding scale fees if cost is an issue. Often the hospitals do some community classes on nutrition and healthy diets for a low cost donation or free as out reach for the local community.

A friend of mine went as far as getting a PhD studying the complex science of metabolism, diet and nutrition. Nutritionists do not have to be registered as Dietitians are required to for working in a hospital setting. Dietitians work in a fine art of science having an understanding of disease and special needs diets to balance a person's health.

Anon: The best coaches are the ones that really inspire and stick with you. I have been to trained nutritionist who gave me broad diet advice that did not help with weight loss at all. My coach gave me recipes based on food I really like and it was healthy AND I lost 45 lbs and have maintained it. Just because a person has a degree or works in a hospital doesn't mean they are the best coach. I do agree with you about fad diets and gimmicks that just take your money. There are lots of those out there. It is important for people to do their homework and find out what works or get a good referral.

I would love a referral Dr. Brayer. I already know how to eat healthy, I just choose not to :-) I don't need a dietician or a nutritionalist per se....I don't really need someone to tell me to eat veggies, I already know that. What I need is a motivator and a great structured program to follow. I will email you privately.

Diet coach? What does that mean anyway? Is there any kind of licensing or training involved, or can anyone with a positive attitude and a thesaurus of encouraging words call themselves a "diet coach" regardless of their actual knowledge of nutrition and dietary balance? Should I find a real upbeat "personal trainer" who doesn't understand physiology? If there is anything that I have learned from reading Dr. Brayer's blog, is that you need to look at the facts and qualifications whenever it involves your health, otherwise you may find yourself at the mercy of charlatans.

talking about health must be the primary focus on every day life and i consider that your post is really interesting and should be read and consider for the every day care of our family and friends health.
we eat and never pay attention to what we are sending to our body which can be rejected and cause future problems to the body..
I have made certain resolution reading your blog and I hope I am able to maintain that for a healthy living.

scintillating scotoma

Nothing like experiencing a medical condition first-hand to really help a doctor understand it from the patient's point of view.  After all these years, I had my first (and hopefully last) scintillating scotoma while sitting on the couch playing "words with friends" on my ipad and watching TV.  A scotoma is a partial loss of vision in a normal visual field.  Scintillate is flashing, sparkles.  Put them together and you have moving, flashing sparkles with a blind spot in your eyes.

Do Doctors Make Too Much Money?

An article in theNew York Times says the reason health care costs are so high in the United States is because doctors are paid too much. I saw that and my eyes bugged out. I just came home from a meeting with physicians and hospital administrators and the entire meeting was spent discussing the financial challenges physicians face in keeping their doors open to see patients. The goal of this meeting was to keep health services in that community so patients will have someone to care for them. Not a person in the room would agree that the doctors earn too much.

Physicians paid too much? Lets break that down. A doctor spends a minimum of 11 years in education and training after the age of 18. Many are in training for 15 or more years. They are living on student loans and contributing zero to their family's income until the residency years. At that time they earn less than minimum wage if you factor in the 80-100 hour workweek.
